Goulburn escapee Christopher Gibbs is back in police custody after trying to flee from officers at a shopping mall in Erina on the NSW Central Coast.

Gibbs had been on the run for more than two weeks until yesterday afternoon when a plain clothes officer recognised him and called for additional resources.

Superintendent Gary Worboys from Goulburn Police says just before three o'clock officers approached the convicted armed robber outside a store at Erina.

Police are still adamant that Gibbs went to ground in Goulburn after his escape seeking refuge in nearby bushland and then came out after nightfall allegedly stealing a vehicle.

He then drove to Lithgow, Bathurst then south to Griffith and then further south towards the Victorian border.

Superintendent Worboys says there was also a sighting at Ulladulla late Tuesday afternoon.

Gibbs has been charged with escaping lawful custody and a number of theft offences and will face Gosford Court today.

In the meantime which jail he returns to will be a matter for Corrective Services.
